First Federal Bank of Kansas City is a $1 billion community bank headquartered in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The bank specializes in mortgage banking and retail banking and is currently reimagining what community banking can be to include BaaS and FinTech relationships. SUMMARY
The right person for the role of Chief Risk Officer (CRO) with be humble, hungry and have a high degree emotional intelligence, they will be internally motivated with high energy. The CRO will interact with the Leadership Team and the Board of Directors and will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive risk management framework for the bank. This includes identifying, assessing, and mitigating all types of risks that the bank faces, including credit risk, operational risk, interest rate risk, reputation risk, vendor risk, strategic risk, and compliance risk. The CRO will also be responsible for overseeing the bank's regulatory compliance program and the bank’s vendor management program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Responsible for the promotion and delivery of quality internal and external customer service.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive risk management framework for the bank to include all risks identified by the bank’s primary regulator.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate all types of risks that the bank faces.
  • Oversee the bank's regulatory compliance program.
  • Oversee the bank’s vendor management program.
  • Develop and implement risk appetite guidelines to be approved by the board of directors.
  • Conduct risk assessments and stress testing.
  • Report risk information to the Board of Directors and senior management
  • Stay up to date on changes in the regulatory environment.
  • Complies with all applicable banking laws and regulations, including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act, USA Patriot Act, and related anti-money laundering statutes, and federal consumer protection legislation and regulations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Fulfills supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, risk management, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in risk management (desired), preferably in the banking industry with a strong emphasis in consumer compliance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience leading risk management for a $1 Billion organization is strongly preferred. 
  • Prior experience in the areas of Contract Review, Fraud detection and prevention, vendor management, change management, corporate insurance, JD (preferred), and experience working with data analytics models preferred.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing effective risk management strategies.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Possesses an intimate knowledge of internal business processes and the banking industry.
  • Exhibits business process knowledge and possesses a broad-based operational perspective of a financial institution.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory. Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
